OUR MISSION
Sapphic Media Literacy Project is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We advance media literacy and education, and we support the creation of sapphic media — films, television, podcasts, and books — to increase and improve sapphic representation on screen and on the page.
By sapphic media literacy we mean the ability to spot and question patterns like stereotyping, erasure, or tokenism in how sapphic people are portrayed on screen and on the page — and to recognize what honest, accurate representation looks like instead.
We operate a Media Creation Grants Program open to all media formats, and we fiscally sponsor independent artists and production companies so they can receive tax-deductible donor support. Our grants and sponsorships exclude our own board members and staff from personal compensation, equity, or profit-sharing — every dollar is aimed at getting sapphic stories made.
