OUR FOUNDER
Megan Lewicki — Founder, President & Executive Director
Megan Lewicki is the founder, President, and Executive Director of Sapphic Media Literacy Project. She holds an MFA in Acting from CalArts and brings over a decade of experience fundraising for nonprofits across sectors — grant writing, donor cultivation, corporate partnerships, building new philanthropic giving vehicles — paired with a career rooted in the arts and in activism. That combination is what makes her uniquely suited to lead the organization: an actor’s firsthand understanding of what it takes to build honest, well-crafted sapphic characters and stories, the fundraising instincts to build sustainable philanthropic support behind them, and an activist’s conviction that representation isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s the point. She founded Sapphic Media Literacy Project to fund filmmakers, authors, and podcasters through grants and fiscal sponsorship rather than equity, so creators keep full ownership and control of their work while donors get a tax-deductible way to back sapphic stories.
JOIN OUR FOUNDING BOARD
Sapphic Media Literacy Project is a new California 501©(3) nonprofit, and we’re recruiting four founding directors to join our President & Executive Director on a five-person board.
Open Roles
Chair of the Board — presides at board meetings and leads votes on decisions about the Executive Director’s compensation or a director’s outside financial interests, to keep those decisions independent
Secretary — keeps the minutes of board meetings, sends required meeting notices, and maintains our corporate records
Treasurer — has custody of our funds, keeps accurate financial records, and reports on our financial position to the board
Director — attends and prepares for quarterly board meetings, helps oversee our mission, finances, and legal compliance, and may serve on a committee such as our Grants Committee
What the Role Involves
Three-year term, with the option to renew
Quarterly board meetings, held on the last business day of each fiscal quarter
Unpaid, volunteer service
An annual personal giving or fundraising expectation, in keeping with standard nonprofit board practice
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome directors from any professional background who share our mission — previous board experience isn’t required. What matters most is a genuine commitment to expanding sapphic representation in media, and the willingness to help us build a sustainable, well-governed organization from the ground up. Prospective directors complete a short screening questionnaire and a conversation with our founder before joining.
Conflicts of Interest
We fiscally sponsor and fund independent creators, so from time to time a board member may have a personal or financial connection to a grantee or sponsee. Any director with such a connection must disclose it and recuse themselves from discussion and voting on that grantee or sponsee’s funding — every grant and sponsorship decision is made by directors with no stake in the outcome.
